Shot by Bandits

Bill Barlows Budget - July 8, 1908

Roy Beltzner left Thursday for his home in Joliet, Illinois having received a telegram stating that his father was shot dead by bandits the evening before. August Beltzner, the deceased, was a man past sixty, having a wide acquaintance and countless friends in Joliet. Two boys, one 19 and the other 18 years of age did the shooting. They went to the little store which the murdered man conducted near his home, at his usual closing time and attempted to hold up the place; but the aged man resisted the robbery and chased the boys to the door where they turned and shot him through the heart. The bandits were captured at their homes several hours later and in the morning one of them confessed their crime. They have been identified with several murders and hold-ups which have been committed in Joliet during the past six months. Roy has many friends in Douglas whose sympathy is with him in this awful calamity.
