Brown, Chester Leroy (Unknown - April, 1927)

Child Drowned in Abandoned Well

Douglas Budget - April 21, 1927

Chester, Leroy, 2 1/2 year-old son of Mr. and Mrs. Clark Brown, living on North Second street, lost his life Sunday when he fell into an old well near his home. The little fellow had been playing in the yard with the other children of the family when they were called in by their mother. The others entered by the front door, Leroy going around to the rear entrance. The soil near the well had been loosened by the recent storm and the child crashed through the frail barrier into the hole. His cries were heard by his mother, who immediately summoned assistance from the neighbors, Mr. Brown being away from home. The child was alive when rescued, but lived but a few minutes after being taken from the well.

Funeral services were held at the Hofmann Chapel Monday afternoon, conducted by Rev. J.E. Ledbetter. Burial was in Douglas cemetery.
