Douglas Budget - March 10, 1999A funeral Liturgy for Fred J. Baker, 71, was March 6 at Saint James Catholic Church in Douglas with Father Andrew Duncan as celebrant.
Vigil for the Deceased was held Friday at Converse Funeral Chapel with Fr. Duncan officiating. Interment was at Douglas Park Cemetery.
Mr. Baker died March 3 at Memorial Hospital of Converse County.
He was born March 7, 1927, in Estelline, S.D. to Fred W. and Florence (Judd) Baker. He was reared and educated in Huron, S.D.
He entered the Navy serving in the South Pacific during World War II.
He married Donna Carpenter on Oct. 5, 1946, in Huron. He worked for two years at various jobs, then he started working for Chicago-North western Railroad in Huron, Fremont Neb., and Douglas before retiring after 37 years. He resided in Douglas during his retirement years.
Mr. Baker loved pigeons and showing them, woodworking and outdoor activities. He enjoyed his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He was a member of St. James Catholic Church.
He is survived by his wife, Donna of Douglas, daughter Peggy A. and her husband Alan Hershley of Greeley, Colo.; brothers and their wives Lemoine and Lillian Baker of Rapid City, S.D., Leonard and Maxine Baker of Mitchell, S.D., Darrell D. and Maxine Baker of Anaconda, Mont., Lyle and June Baker of Rapid City; Verne and Freda Baker of Pierre, S.D., sisters and their husbands Florence and Wesley Probst of Sacramento, Calif., and Donna and Morris Lashwood of Huron; grandchildren David and wife Amy Hershley of Boone, Iowa; Paul Hershley of Douglas and Ruth Hershley of Greeley, Colo.; and seven great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
Serving as pallbearers were all of his many railroad friends.
Memorial to the choice of the would be appreciated by the family.
Converse Funeral Chapel of Douglas was in charge of arrangements.
