Wyoming Pioneer dies in Uba City
Douglas Budget - June 15, 1978Services for Mrs. Bertha Edna Bird, 100, will be held Thursday, June 15, at 2 p.m. at the Stark-Lapham Funeral Home. The Rev. Curtis Adkison will officiate with burial in Douglas Park Cemetery.
Mrs. Bird died June 10 at the Uba City Convalescent Home, Uba City, Calif., following a lengthy illness.
Bertha Edna George was born Sept. 15, 1877 at Senica, Crawford County, Wisconsin to Fred and Mary Ellen George. She was the eldest of 11 children.
She arrived in Douglas by covered wagon on April, 1886 when Douglas was only a tent town on Antelope Creek. She was united in marriage to Gordon V. Fitzhugh on Feb. 20, 1895.
She later left the Fitzhugh ranch south of Douglas which is presently owned by her son Gordon and moved to Douglas and later to Cheyenne. Her last years were spent in California.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Gordon V. Fitzhugh, one son John F. Fitzhugh, and one daughter Blanche Miller.
She is survived by children Mary Taylor, Rose I. Dempsey and Jean Detter of Uba City and Gordon Fitzhugh of Douglas.
Also surviving are one sister, Maude Nunn; six grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren and 18 great-great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.
