Sheriff Elmer Bloem dies
Douglas Budget - March 26, 1964Elmer L. Bloem, 41, Converse County Sheriff since January, 1963, died early Thursday morning at Converse County Memorial hospital after an extended illness.
Mr. Bloem, who had been a law enforcement officer by career for more than eight years, served three years under Sheriff Bill Owens as Undersheriff at Glenrock before winning election at the polls in November, 1962.
He served with the United States Navy as a Seabee from 1942-1945. He also went as a civilian on a ten-month tour in Greenland shortly before he began his career as a law-enforcement officer. He was known to other local officers as a friendly and conscientious member of his profession.
Mr. Bloem was born in Grand Island, Nebr., a son of Mr. and Mrs. Jack Bloem. the family moved to Converse County in 1933 and Elmer graduated from Douglas High School.
He is survived by his wife, Grace, a son Jack L., daughter Rene, his parents, aunts, uncles, and cousins.
Mr. Bloem had been ill since a cancer operation in September.
Funeral services for Mr. Bloem will be held Saturday at 2:30 P.M. at the First Methodist Church in Douglas.
The family said that memorial contributions to the Converse County Cancer fund would be as equally acceptable as flowers.
