William Emmet Ballard was born in Mankato, Jewell County Kansas, November 22, 1904 and died at Douglas June 4, 1978 of a long illness of emphysema and heart ailments.

In 1917 his parents moved to Douglas, taking up a homestead in the Box Creek-Dry Creek area where they engaged in the sheep business. Except for three years in the Salt Creek oil fields, Emmet spent his entire life on the ranches. He was a member of the Masonic lodge at Douglas and an avid advocate of aviation, at one time holding a farm Pilot's license.

In October 1932, Emmet and Elisabeth Schick were married. To this union four sons were born, William E. of Newcastle, Kenneth of Lander, Don of the family home and Richard of Americus, Ga. Surviving him are his wife, four sons, five grandchildren, three brothers Carroll and Melvin of Douglas, Daniel O. of Cody and a sister Mabel Dixon of Torrance Cal. Burial was in the family plot at Douglas.

Pallbearers were Lawrence Nachtman, Niel Irene, Robert Stoddard, Jerry Nachtman, Earl Reed and Morris Bennett.

Honorary pallbearers were Rollie Sadler, Wilbur Stoddard, Jim Sherwin, August Riehle, Durward Robertson, Harold Schmidt, Oscar Middleton and Harold Link.

Services were held Wednesday, June 7, 1978 at The Methodist Church in Douglas, Rev. Harry Randall, officiating.
