Douglas woman's brother dies
Douglas Budget - November 11, 1976Merie Saul and Jo Roush drove to Norfolk, Nebraska last Tuesday, November 2, to attend the funeral services for Merie's brother, Clare Blakeman, long resident of that city.
F. Clare Blakeman, 79, 1309 Koenigstein Ave. retired Norfolk businessman, died Monday morning at the Veterans Hospital in Grand Island.
Services were held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at First Congregational United Church of Christ with the Rev. Louie J. Schweppe officiating. Burial will be in Prospect Hill Cemetery.
The body lied in state Tuesday from 4 to 9 p.m. at the Howser Mortuary.
Mr. Blakeman was born May 18, 1879, at Norfolk to Mr. and Mrs. William H. Blakeman. He was a lifetime Norfolkan and a veteran of World War I. He was first associated with Blakeman Transfer Company, later established Nehi Bottling Company and later was involved in na mink ranch near the city.
He was a past member of the Elks Lodge, past president of Norfolk Kiwanis Club, past member of the Norfolk YMCA Board and a life member of American Legion Post 16. He started the Civil Air Patrol here and was also involved in development of Karl Stefan Memorial Field.
He married LaVona Roush in Norfolk May 18, 1928. She survives as do two sons, Roger of Denver, Co., and George of Boise, Idaho, nine grandchildren, and one sister, Mrs. Merie Saul of Douglas, Wyo.
Mr. Blakeman was preceded in death by two brothers and one sister.
