LaMonte T. Ballard, M.D., of Sterling, Ill., died June 26, 2005, at his home with family and loved ones at his side.

Dr. Ballard, 70, was born July 16, 1934, in Douglas to Samuel and Mabel Eliza Ballard.

He married Sally Bickford on May 10, 1956. She preceded him in death in 1997. He then married Patricia A. Micor Stillwell on Jan. 15, 1999.

Dr. Ballard graduated from the University of Colorado Medical School in June 1959. He moved to Sterling in 1960 and began a partnership with Peter T. Gray, M.D. Dr. Ballard delivered more than 5,000 babies in his career. He was often recognized as one of the finest rural doctors in Illinois.

Dr. Ballard served as Captain of the Illinois National Guard in Rock Falls. He was a member of Harvest Time Bible Church as well as an active member of the Gideons.

Survivors include his wife, Patricia; daughter Kathy (Tony) Craig of Sterling; son LaMonte Ballard of Davis Junction, Ill.; stepdaughter Rachelle (Jason) Matthews of Rock Falls, Ill.; stepson Todd Stillwell of Camanche, Iowa; sister Barbara (Frank) Lyons of Wyoming; brothers Samuel (Awanda) Ballard of Douglas and Walter Ballard of Longmont, Colo; and grandchildren Alexandria Olivia, Maria, Amelia, Samuel, Hannah, Jessica and Luke.
