Douglas Budget - August 16, 1984Graveside services for Katie M. Ballard, age 101 of Torrington, who died Tuesday, Aug. 7, 1984 at a Scottsbluff, Nebraska hospital were held at Horseshoe Cemetery in Glendo, Wyoming on Saturday, Aug. 11, 1984 at 2:00 p.m. with Mr. James Wilson officiating.
A memorial has been established to Moran Park in Glendo; the gifts will be combined with those of the T.W. Cooper Memorial.
Katie was born May 2, 1883 near Indianola, Iowa, the daughter of Erastus and Lydia(Septer) Scott. The family moved to South Dakota for a few years and then moved south to make their home near Coffey, Missouri, where she married Otis Earl Ballard on December 21, 1909.
They came to homestead on a ranch 34 miles southwest of Gillette, Wyoming in an emigrant car. The Ballards lived on the Campbell County homestead for seven years before moving to a ranch north of Gillette. In 1937 they lived briefly on a ranch in Platte County near Glendo. They moved to Torrington and bought a cafe. After selling that business they moved to Wheatland where they owned the Coffee Shop.
They also lived on Elmer Lee's ranch and then operated the hotel in Chugwater before moving back to Wheatland and later to Glendo.
Since Mr. Ballard's death in 1964, Katie has lived in Torrington in her own home. She entered Goshen County Memorial Nursing Home in May of this year.
She is survived by her daughter, Mrs. T.W.(Winnie)Cooper of Torrington; three grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren. In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by two brothers and one sister.
The Colyer Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.
