J. Melvin Ballard, 85, died Sunday afternoon at the home of his son, D.W. Ballard, 30 miles northeast of Douglas. A heart attack was the cause of his death.

J. Melvin Ballard was born July 12, 1850, at Weber, Kan., son of Mr. and Mrs. Daniel W. Ballard. He lived in that community most of his life, being engaged in farming. Fifteen years ago he came to this county, making his home while here with his sons, Arthur E. in Douglas and D.W. at the ranch.

Beside his sons he is survived by two daughters, Mrs. Nora Watson of Cortez, Colo,m and Mrs. Alice Smiley of Galf, Calif.

Funeral services were held at the Baptist church Wednesday morning, Rev. J.M. Falconer being the officiating minister. The body was shipped to the old home at Weber for buriel. Mr. and Mrs. A.E. Ballard and Mr. and Mrs. D.W. Ballard and Bill Dixon are attending the funeral.
