Douglas Budget - November 6, 2002Funeral services for Helen Joyce Batton, 71, were held Nov. 5 at Converse Funeral Chapel in Douglas, with Rev. Martin Strom of the Congregational United Church of Christ officiating. Interment will be at Douglas Park Cemetery.
A celebration of her life followed at Douglas Community Club.
Mrs. Batton died in the early morning of Oct. 29, 2002, at Wyoming Medical Center's Intensive Care Unit in Casper.
She was born Sept. 19, 1931, at Bridgeport, Neb., to John Manford and Eolyn Otella(Boon)Yardley. She was reared and educated in Converse County and was very active at Douglas High School where she graduated in 1949.
She attended Chadron State Teachers College for a semester and then taught in a one-room county schoolhouse for half a year.
On Jan. 20, 1951, she married the love of her life Frank Batton at the Congregational United Church of Christ in Douglas. She raised three sons, Bruce, Brent and Bill, with love and swift kicks in their respective bottoms.
Mrs. Batton traveled the world with her husband, starting in Glenrock in 1951, then to Laramie, Montana, Alaska, Egypt, back to Wyoming, then to Scotland for eight years before finally retiring to Douglas in 1989.
Her passion for life was exhibited in her friendships, her love of flowers and her devotion to her family. She is and always will be remembered as the fiery, loving wife, mother and friend.
She is survived by her husband Frank of Douglas; sons Bruce J. Batton of Clam Gulch, Alaska, and Bill John Batton of Douglas; sister Lenore Lore of Douglas; three grandchildren; and two great-granddaughters.
She was preceded in death by her parents; son Brent J. Batton in May 1995; and sister Pauline Coupens in January 2002.
Memorials to Hamilton Street Express Memorial Fund in care of Converse Funeral Chapel, P.O. Box X, Douglas, would be appreciated by the family.
