Douglas Budget - February 26, 2003A funeral service for Emily Gertrude Gladson Bowker was held Feb. 20 in Gering, Neb. Committal followed at Fairview Cemetery in Scottsbluff.
She died Feb. 15 at Northfield Villa Medical Center in Gering, surrounded by her family.
Mrs. Bowker was born April 13, 1917, in Alliance, Neb., to Raymond C.(Blondie)and Elsie Marie Betebenner Gladson.
On April 2, 1942, she married George Pershing Bowker, Sr. in San Francisco.
She was a resident of Scottsbluff for 59 years, and a member of St. Andrew's Episcopal Church where she was active in the Altar Guild. She was telephone operator at the Alliance Air Force Base during World War II, a beautician and part owner/business manager at Bowker Plumbing and Heating.
She and her husband enjoyed square dancing and round dancing. Mrs. Bowker loved playing cards, especially pinochle and bridge, with her friends. She was well-known for her intricate needlepoint, which can be found on altar kneeling pads at St. Andrew's.
She delighted in creating crocheted blankets for her grandchildren and knitting. She was an accomplished seamstress, sewing for herself and her children. She was also an avid crafter.
Mrs. Bowker was known for her tasty apple and cherry pies and weekly loaves of wheat bread. She baked Christmas cookies and candies to share with her family, friends and neighbors. She loved flower and vegetable gardening, acquiring the title of "Pickle Queen" from her friends. She was also an enthusiastic Cornhusker fan.
She is survived by her husband George P. Bowker, Sr.,; son George P. Bowker, Jr. of Gering; daughters and sons-in-law Lynda and Gordon Specht of Covington, Va., and Nancy and George Meyer of Douglas; grandchildren Tracy Butler and husband Shorty, of Cody, Heather Specht of Zanesville, Ohio, Sara Bowker of Scottsbluff, Shannon Fincher and wife Jill of Rapid City, Brad Bowker of Lincoln, Neb., Jason Specht of Morgantown, W.Va., Allison Bowker of Kearney, Neb., and Kristen Meyer of Douglas; cousin Matt Wolfe of Green Valley, Ariz.; brother-in-law Jack and wife Annabelle Bowker of Hesperia, Calif.; sisters-in-law Angie Gladson of Durango, Colo., and Jean Bowker of Long Beach, Calif.; and two nieces and six nephews.
She is preceded in death by her parents; infant son Daniel Harvey Bowker; sister Elizabeth(Betty)Jane Enright; and brother Arnold Lloyd Gladson.
Pallbearers were her sons, sons-in-law and grandsons.
