Funeral services for Shelby J. Brooks, 23, were held March 19 at the Douglas High School gymnasium with Pastor Dan Hickman officiating and Troy Tillard as eulogist.

Interment was at Douglas Park Cemetery.

Mr. Brooks died March 16 in Chadron, Neb.

He was born Dec. 12, 1977, in Buffalo to Myron and Theresa(Lenz)Brooks. The family lived in Linch, then moved to Douglas in 1981.

Mr. Brooks was educated in Douglas schools and graduated from Douglas High School in 1996. He was active in football, basketball and track during high school. He attended Sheridan College in Sheridan, earning an associate's degree in education in 1998.

The past three years he has attended Chadron State College in Chadron. During summer vacations he enjoyed working at the Douglas Golf Course for three years and the Crawford Golf Course in Crawford, Neb., for a year. He was planning to attend turf management at Rutgers. He enjoyed golfing, fishing, hunting, boating and, most of all, spending time with family and friends.

He is survived by his parents, Myron and Teresa Brooks of Crawford, Neb.; sisters Michelle Buckingham of Boise, Idaho, and Kary Brooks of Mitchell, S.D.; grandparents Juanita and Bill Needens of Buffalo, Barb Kennedy of Sutherland, Neb., and Albert Lenz of Cody; great-grandmother Grace Lenz of Curtis, Neb.; nieces Brianna and Allison Buckingham of Boise; and numerous aunts and uncles and cousins.

Serving as pallbearers were Troy Tillard, Matt Edwards, Casey Cochran, Keith Moore, Pete Weber and Kael Wood.

Serving as honorary pallbearers were Tim Tillard, Frank Moore, Parker Moore, Ed Sheridan, Randy Sieg and Gary Glenn.

Memorials to the Shelby J. Brooks Memorial Scholarship Fund, in care of Converse County Bank, P.O. Box 689, Douglas, would be appreciated by the family.

Converse Funeral Chapel of Douglas was in charge of the arrangements.
