Douglas Budget - July 1, 1948Douglas again lost one of its pioneer residents this week when Harvey P, Allen, 87, who came to Douglas at the time the town was started, died at the home of his daughter, Mrs. R. L. Swan, last Sunday morning. He had been in ill health for some time, having undergone an operation at Long Beach, Calif., early this year, before returning here for the summer season.
Harvey Preston Allen was born in Virginia on Nov. 24, 1890, the son of Hugh and Mary Driscoll Allen. Moving to Ohio, Kansas and Colorado, he come to Wyoming in 1880 and settled in the vicinity of what is now Douglas in 1882. He was united in marriage with Edith McAllister in Stockville, Neb., on Sept. 23, 1889.
Well known in the early days as a freighter, he was also a stockman, rancher and garageman. Serving in a number of political offices, he was among other things, mayor of Douglas, a county commissioner and a deputy sheriff.
Survivors include his widow; four children, Doris Allen, Los Angeles, Calif., Robert Allen of Greeley, Colo., Harvey Allen of Laramie, and Mrs. R. L. Swan of Douglas. A number of grand children and great grandchildren also survive.
Funeral services were held Wednesday afternoon at the Congregational church, with Rev. Louis Gale officiating. Interment was in Douglas Park cemetery.
