Harold 'Mickey' Bernstein

Douglas Budget - July 24, 1996

A celebration of life for Harold M. "Mickey" Bernstein Jr., 57, will be Wednesday, July 24, at 5 p.m. at the Douglas Community Club.

Mr. Bernstein died July 15, 1996, of a stroke while tractoring on his ranch, which he loved.

He was born in Sacramento, Calif., Jan. 21, 1939, to Harold and Betty(Convey)Bernstein Sr. At the age of 3, the family moved to San Francisco, where he attended grade school.

The family then moved to Palo Alto, Calif., where Mickey attended high school and lived in the Moody Canyon near Los Altos, Calif., until he moved to Douglas three years ago.

After serving two years in the U.S. Army, he worked in the Bernstein Company and later founded his own print shop with his friend and partner Denis Chow. He retired in 1986.

He then worked as an outdoor writer for Western Outdoor News and traveled the world hunting and fishing in Africa, Mongolia, Argentina, Northwest Territories and Wyoming.

After moving to Douglas, he worked briefly as an outdoor writer for the Douglas Budget.

Mr. Bernstein spent his entire life lobbying and as an activist for hunting, fishing, wetlands, wildlife and outdoor traditions. He was an avid waterfowler, hunter, outdoorsman, golfer, skier and sailor, and he lived life to the fullest.

He was preceded in death by his father.

He is survived by his mother Betty Bernstein of Los Altos; his wife Marilyn of Douglas; brothers Richard Bernstein of Honolulu, Hawaii, and Andrew Bernstein of Los Altos; sons Mike Bernstein of Boulder Creek, Calif., and Steve Bernstein of Cupertino, Calif.; and granddaughter Michelle.

Honorary pallbearers are Fiore Rouetta, his family, and many friends.
