Douglas Budget - September 17, 2008Benjamin Joseph Baum, 29, of Scottsbluff died Saturday, Sept. 13, 2008, at his home.
Funeral services will be on Thursday, Sept. 18, at 10 a.m. at the Mitchell Berean Church with Pastor George Stepan officiating. Burial will follow at the Fairview Cemetery in Scottsbluff. Visitation will be held on Sept. 17 from 1-7 p.m. at the funeral home.
In lieu of flowers the Ben Baum Memorial fund has been established at Pinnacle Bank, P.O. Box 127, Mitchell, NE 69357.
A memorial service will also be conducted on Friday, Sept. 19, at 4 p.m. in the Douglas High School Auditorium.

Ben was born May 21, 1979, in Douglas to Richard and Olive (Stepan) Baum. As a child he grew up in Nebraska, then graduated from Douglas High School. He attended colleges in Riverton and Chadron State College. Ben was enlisted in the Nebraska Army National Guard in which he was deployed to Iraq during Operation Enduring Freedom with the 1057th T-C out of Chadron, Neb., and was honorably discharged as a sergeant. When he returned from his deployment, he and Chris Kaplan were married May 4, 2004. He then attended the Wyoming Law Enforcement Academy where he received the "Honor Graduate Award" of the class of 2005.
Ben served the Douglas Police Department and Converse County Sheriff's Office and was currently employed by the Mitchell Police Department. He was a member of the American Legion and the Blue Knights Law Enforcement Motorcycle Club.
He is survived by his wife, Chris and daughter, McKenzie Baum of Scottsbluff; father Richard Baum of Wheatridge, Colo.; mother Olive Baum and brother Nate Baum, both of Douglas; and grandparents Rosemary and Ken Stone of Indianapolis, Ind.
