Mary Leona Barnes Carroll
Unknown - November 6, 1969Mary Leona Barnes was born Nov. 15, 1885 in Eibley, Iowa, to Herbert E. and Matilda M. Spencer Barnes.
She moved with her parents, three brothers and three sisters to Lusk in 1908. Her parents and three sisters homesteaded near Node (now part of the Kaan Bros. ranch). Two brothers and a younger sister homesteaded in the Lightning and Walker Creek areas.
She was united in marriage to James E. Carroll July 3, 1911 at Harrison, Nebr. Three boys and one girl were born to this union - Herbert James, Henry Walace, Marguerite Leona and David Emerson.
They homesteaded on Lightning Creek. James E. died on Nov. 3, 1918, and Mrs. Carroll with her three children where she lived until 1942. She lived in Lander until 1957 and in Douglas since.
Mrs. Carroll died Oct. 24, 1969 at Michael Manor. She was preceded in death by her parents, two sisters, three brothers, her husband and two sons.
She is survived by two sisters, Mrs. Jennie Graves of Norwalk, Calif., Mrs. Dorothy Spencer of Sioux City, Iowa; two children, Mrs. Marguerite Backer and Mr. David Carroll of Tucson, Ariz.; seven grandchildren; five great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
