Douglas Budget - November 14, 1957Funeral services were held here November 6 at Stark's chapel for Walter E. Clay, 81, who died Nov. 2 in the Rosebud Community hospital in South Dakota. The Rev. Clyde Thompson of the First Baptist church officiated and burial was in the family plot beside his wife in Douglas Park cemetery.
Walter E. Clay was born on March 16, 1876 at Panama, Neb., the son of Mr. and Mrs. George Clay. On Oct. 5, 1897, he was united in marriage with Margaret Schellinger. They lived at Panama for several years, then came to Converse county in 1914 in a covered wagon, later taking up a homestead west of Orin where they lived for several years before moving to Douglas.
Following the death of his wife in 1952, he made his home with his daughter, Mrs. Jesse Spellman and husband, on their ranch southeast of Douglas. When the Spellmans moved to Winner, S.D. in 1954, he went with them and continued to make his home with them until his death.
Survivors include his daughter, Mrs. Fern Spellman; one brother, William of Martinsdale, Mont.; three sisters, Mrs. Elsie Anderson, Lincoln, Neb., and Mrs. Blanche Ware of Whittier, Cal., two grandchildren, and several great-grandchildren.
