Unknown - April 10, 1958Earl S. Clayton, County Assessor of Converse County for the past nine years, died in the Casper hospital last Thursday morning, April 3rd, at 11:00 o'clock.
He had been ill of a heart ailment since January 6th, and was in the hospital for about a month, returning home Feb. 8. He suffered a relapse the last of March and entered the Casper Hospital April 1, and died April 3.
Mr. Clayton was well known throughout Converse County and this part of the state. He operated a ranch for many years south of Glenrock in the Boxelder community.
Around the First World War era, he was a deputy sheriff in Glenrock for four years, and later served many years as a mail carrier. He was a county commissioner for 12 years prior to becoming county assessor.
He was a member of the Odd Fellow Lodge at Glenrock for 45 years, and the Rebekah Lodge for 26 years. A member of the Episcopal Church, he was confirmed in the church on Monday evening, March 31, 1958, by Bishop Hunter of Laramie.
Mr. Clayton was 67 years of age. He was born in Glenrock Jan. 23, 1891. He was married on Sept. 9, 1916, to Gertrude Lythgoe of Carbon, Wyo., in Douglas.
Funeral services were held at the Episcopal Church Saturday afternoon, April 5, with the Rev. Miller officiating, and interment was in the Douglas cemetery, with graveside services by the Odd Fellows Lodge of Glenrock. Members of the lodge acting as pallbearers were Wm. Walkinshaw, Robert Walkinshaw, Edward Clark, John Hakalo, George Beach and Vern Griffiths.
Survivors are Mrs. Clayton and one son, Everett. One brother, Vern of Idaho City, Idaho, and two sisters, Mrs. Jack Hajny, Longmont, Colo., and Mrs. Richard Hanson, Denver. There are four grandchildren.
Out-of-town relatives here for the funeral included Mr. and Mrs. Harlo Lythgoe, Denver, Mr. and Mrs. Jack Hajny, Longmont, Mrs. Richard Hanson, Denver. Mr. and Mrs. Everett Clayton and children, Brighton, Colo., Mr. and Mrs. Marian Reed from Casper, Mrs. Herman Stine, Casper, Mrs. Johnanieve Hamilton Casper, Mrs. Gerald Smith and daughter, Casper, and Mrs. Ruth Clayton and son of Cody.
