BELOVED WOMAN SUDDENLY STRICKEN
HEART ATTACK SUFFERED SUNDAY EVENING PROVES FATAL FOR PIONEER LIVED HERE 35 YEARS
Douglas Enterprise - October 14, 1930Mrs. Nellie M. (Barrow) Combs, for 35 years a highly respected resident of Converse county, was suddenly stricken Sunday evening by a heart attack and she could be removed to the hospital her life ebbed out with Mr. Combs the only member of the devoted family at her side as the end came, the others being notified as quickly as was possible of her condition when she was stricken.
Mrs. Combs came to Douglas and Converse county in the spring of 1896 with her husband. Since that day she has been active, and prominent, in the affairs of the community, church, social and fraternal, and beloved by her friends, neighbors and acquaintances.
Nellie M. Barrow was born at Tecumseh, Nebr., March 5, 1868. November 16, 1887, she was united in marriage to Ellsworth B. Combs. Four children were born to bless the union, three of whom remain to mourn her passing while cherishing the memory of an always devoted mother. They are: Roy, Eugene and Helen (Mrs. George Warner) all of Douglas. Guy, preceded his mother into the Great Beyond.
Mrs. Combs was the last of her family, which, too, consisted of four children, one of whom: M.C. Barrow, for years edited and published Bill Barlow's Budget and wrote under the non de plume of "Bill Barlow" with his "sagebrush Philosophy" being quoted widely, was a brother.
A member of the Eastern Star, and Woodcraft fraternal orders and the Douglas Woman's Club and Douglas Music club, Mrs. Combs gave freely of her time and unusual accomplishments during her long residence here, endearing herself to the community by reason of her public spiritedness.
Funeral services are to be held at the Congregational church in this city Wednesday afternoon at 2:30, with Rev. Horace Mann, now residing at Sheridan, preaching. Interment is to be in Douglas cemetery.
