Funeral liturgy for Mary Amelia (Ryan)Cross, 96, will be held 10 a.m. Oct. 9 at Saint James Catholic Church in Douglas with Father John Savio as the Celebrant.

Vigil for the Deceased will be held 7 p.m. Oct. 8 at Gorman Funeral Homes-Converse Chapel in Douglas. Interment will be in the family plot at Douglas Park Cemetery.

Mary died Oct. 4, 2008, at Memorial Hospital of Converse County.

She was born Oct. 7, 1911, in Goodland, Kan., to John Vincent and Mary Margaret (McLaughlin) Ryan. She moved with her family to Wyoming in 1917 and lived on a homestead north of Douglas on Walker Creek. The family later moved to Glenrock, where she attended school and graduated from the Glenrock-Parkerton High School. She took courses affiliated with the University of Wyoming and earned her teaching certificate. She taught school in Converse County for five years.

On April 17, 1934, she married George H. Cross Jr. in Kimball, Neb. The couple resided in Douglas on the Buck Shot Ranch and later moved to the Bedtick Ranch southwest of Douglas.

She was a member of Zonta International and a charter member of the Converse County Chapter. She held the position of president from 1977-79. She also was a member of the Wyoming Cowbelles Association and was the 16th state president in 1955. She was a member of Saint James Catholic Church.

She is survived by her children, George H. (Susanne) Cross III of Douglas, John Michael Cross of Douglas, James Roderick Cross of Ponca City, Okla., and Mary Julia (Michael) Wilson of Douglas; eight grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; seven great-great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband of 36 years; brothers John Vincent Ryan and Michael "Bud" Ryan; sisters Catherine Ryan and Veronica Hanley; and grandsons Roderick Ernest Cross and John Michael Cross Jr.

Mary will be remembered for the unconditional love for her family, her grace, style, and wit. She has left with us her strength, wisdom, and faith in God.

Pallbearers will be Julie Evins, George H. Cross IV, Lea Marie Walker, Ryan I. Stoelk, Paul G. Smith, Allegra Wagner, Dawn Michelle Hiebert and Mendy Marie Scoville. Honorary pallbearers will be her great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.

Family and friends may call the funeral home on Wednesday from 4-7 p.m.

A memorial to the Converse County Zonta Club, P.O. Box 954, Douglas, WY 82633 would be appreciated by the family.
