John Baldwin Carrier, 92, of Surprise, Ariz., died June 20, 2005.

Born in Cunningham, Kan., on May 19, 1913, he received his bachelor's degree from Wichita State and his master's degree in geology from the University of Iowa. He worked as a geologist in Wyoming and the Rocky Mountains for more than 35 years. He was employed by Superior and Champlin oil companies in Casper, then did consulting work as an independent geologist for the majority of his career.

Mr. Carrier enjoyed sculpting and painting and was an avid back-packer and fisherman. He traveled throughout the world and lived for a year in the Canary Islands off the coast of Spain during a job in the Sahara Desert.

He is preceded in death by his first wife, Orlena (Sammy) Carrier in 1962. In 1974, he married Estelle Stacy Carrier of Douglas, who died in 1994.

Survivors include his wife, Maxine Carrier of Surprise; her daughter Susan Young of Sun City, Ariz.; sons Chris Carrier of Salinas, Calif., and Jeff Carrier of Hulett; daughter Janet Penland of Edwards, Colo.; and grandchildren Sarah Penland and AdriAnne and John Carrier.

Memorial services were June 29 at Chaparral Winds Retirement Community in Surprise.
