Douglas Budget - June 7, 1995Graveside services and interment for Merle E. Cowger, 76, will be Wednesday, June 7, at 2 p.m. at the Douglas Park Cemetery.
The Rev. Bill Moore of First United Methodist Church will officiate.
Mrs. Cowger died Saturday, June 3, 1995, at the emergency room at Converse County Memorial Hospital. She had suffered for several years from chronic lung congestion but died from a heart attack.
She was born June 9, 1918, in southern Alberta, Canada, to Jesse and Ella (Epperson) Cunningham. She spent much of her life in and around Billings, Mont., and moved to Douglas in 1950. She married John F. "Jack" Cowger on June 1, 1954, in Douglas.
For many years she worked in the food service business, including owning the Douglas Cafe for several years and managing the Douglas Community Club for two years in the early 1960s. She was active in several bowling leagues and supported numerous community activities through the Moose Lodge and Samuel Mares America Legion Post #8. She was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary and was an avid gardener and loved doing needle point.
She is survived by her husband Jack of Douglas; son Ronald Cowger of Redmond, Wash.; sister Bertha Berg of Billings; and granddaughter Burgandy Cowger of Redmond.
She was preceded in death by her parents and 15 brothers and sisters.
Serving as pallbearers will be Lynn Haines, Ronald Cowger, Bill Sack and Gene Morvee.
A memorial to the American Cancer Society would be appreciated by the family.
Converse Funeral Chapel of Douglas is in charge of the arrangements. Family and friends may call at the funeral home on Wednesday from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.
