Douglas Budget - November 6, 2002Graveside services and interment for Marvin L. Carpenter, 87, will be held at 2 p.m. Nov. 8 at Douglas Park Cemetery in Douglas. Ashlar Masonic Lodge #10 AF & AM will officiate.
Mr. Carpenter died Nov. 4, 2002, at the Memorial Hospital of Converse County emergency room.
He was born Aug. 7, 1915, in Mindenmines, Mo., to Luther and Harriet (Richey) Carpenter. He was reared and educated in Missouri and Kansas.
On June 1, 1935, he married Mary E. Cluncher in Lamar, Mo. The couple moved to western Kansas where they farmed for several years. In the 1960s Mr. Carpenter became involved in oilfield work, which took him first to Kimball, Neb., then to Scottsbluff and finally to Douglas.
He had to take an early retirement because of a stroke that disabled him.
Mr. Carpenter was a member of Wallace Masonic Lodge #218 in Wallace, Kan., since 1947. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, going to brandings, hi family and especially his grandchildren.
He is survived by his wife Mary of Douglas; son Dean and wife Cleo Carpenter of Douglas; brother Howard Carpenter of California; eight grandchildren; 25 great-grandchildren; and 15 great-great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; sons Melvin Gene Carpenter, Donald Eugene Carpenter and Larry Lee Carpenter; a sister; two brothers; grandson Troy Carpenter; and great-grandsons Calvin Joe Firnekas and infant Aaron Carpenter.
Serving as pallbearers will be members of the Ashlar Masonic Lodge #10 AF & AM.
Memorials to the donor's choice would be appreciated by the family.
Converse Funeral Chapel of Douglas is in charge of the arrangements. Family and friends may call at the funeral home from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Nov. 7 and from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Nov. 8.
