Douglas Budget - July 21, 2010Funeral services for Mary Erma Carpenter, 94, will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday, July 21, at Gorman Funeral Homes - Converse Chapel Douglas, with the Rev. Linda Wells of First United Methodist Church officiating.
Interment will be in Douglas Park Cemetery.
Mary Carpenter died Sunday, July 18, 2010, at her home in Douglas.
She was born Aug. 25, 1915, in Liberal, Mo., the daughter of Lou and May (Sisk) Claunch. She was reared and educated in Liberal and graduated from Liberal High School in 1934.
She was married to Marvin L. Carpenter on June 1, 1935, in Lamar, Mo. They moved to western Kansas to farm, and Marvin got involved with the oilfields. They were involved with the oilfields in Kimball and Scottsbluff, Neb., in the early 1960s and in Douglas.
She has resided in Douglas since 1965. She worked in the butcher shop of Ideals Foods Grocery Store and cleaned rooms at the LaBonte Hotel. She enjoyed reading, fishing, and gardening. She played the piano in the family band in Missouri.
She is survived by her son, Marvin Dean (Cleo) Carpenter of Douglas; eight grandchildren; 25 great-grandchildren; and 15 great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband Marvin on Nov. 4, 2002; sons Melvin Gene Carpenter, Donald Eugene Carpenter on April 26, 1970, and Larry Lee Carpenter, on April 12, 1984; grandson Troy Carpenter; great-grandson Calvin Joe Firnekas; infant great-grandson Aaron Carpenter; and great-great-granddaughter Faith Firnekas.
Serving as pallbearers will be Tim Carpenter, Terry Carpenter, Mike Carpenter, Jack Carpenter, Ed Sack and Chris Carpenter.
A memorial to the choice of the donor would be appreciated by the family.
