1923-2008

Douglas Budget - June 18, 2008

Funeral services for James Emerson Clausen 84, were held June 17 at Douglas Baptist Church, with Pastor Roy Phillips officiating and Aaron Clausen as the eulogist. Interment was in Douglas Park Cemetery.

Jim Clausen, a lifelong resident and rancher of Converse County, died June 14, 2008, at Douglas Care Center.

He was born July 8, 1923, to Wyoming pioneers Hans Pete and Nellie M. (Anderson) Clausen at his family's homestead in northern Converse County. He attended the Clausen School in northern Converse County and graduated from Douglas High School.

He married Dorothy Helen Isaac on Jan. 9, 1947, in Cheyenne. Jim was a rancher his entire life. They lived on the family ranch on LaBonte Creek, where they ranched for the remainder of their lives. He was a devoted husband, working side by side with Dorothy almost every day of their 55 years together.

He was proud of his Wyoming and Scandinavian heritage. He believed in justice and struggled to make every endeavor fair. He was a committed Christian and had attended many community churches, serving as Sunday school teacher, trustee and deacon.

Jim was a member of Douglas Baptist Church and local and state Farm Bureau and had served on the Douglas School Board. He was an ex-officio member of the LaBonte Homemakers. Jim and Dorothy worked in the cafeteria during the Wyoming State Fair for many years and considered fair time their vacation.

He enjoyed hunting, gardening, feeding his cats, taking care of his chickens, telling stories, going to church and homemaker's functions and junk mail. He had a wicked sense of humor. He loved his God, his family, his fellow man and the land.

He is survived by sons and spouses Fred (Sharon) Clausen of Edmond, Okla., and Robert (Kellie) Clausen of Douglas; grandchildren Christina Bellinger of North Rose, N.Y., Anita Overgaard of Greeley, Colo., Aaron Clausen of Douglas, Aubrie Salazar of Cheyenne and Aiden Clausen of Douglas; step-grandchildren Don Clausen of Crawford, Neb., and Chuck Davies of Greeley; sisters Marie Jones of Bucyrus, Mo., and Esther Schnoor of Casper; sisters -in-law Ginger Isaac of Austin, Texas, and Mary Clausen of Riverton; and numerous great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; wife Dorothy on July 18, 2002; brothers Francis, Newt and Art; sister Clara; and two step-grandsons.

A memorial to the Ranchers' Memorial Scholarship Fund in care of Converse County Bank, P.O. Box 689, Douglas, WY 82633, or to Douglas Baptist Church, 135 Pearson Drive, Douglas, WY 82633, would be appreciated by the family.
