Transient Killed By Train Near

Douglas Budget - October 15, 1959

Joe Chavez, 55, of Capulin, Colo., was killed Friday, Oct. 9, by a passenger train as he was looking for a lost bedroll along the railroad tracks about two miles west of Douglas.

According to Coroner Cecil Stark, Chavez had been riding in a freight train and lost his bedroll and had gotten off in Douglas and walked back along the tracks to hunt for it. He was hit by the oncoming CB&Q passenger train as he walked across a bridge over the Platte River. Since the wind was particularly strong that day, apparently he didn't hear the train as it approached.

Chavez formerly worked at Glendo as a railroad laborer.

Graveside services were held Monday, October 12, with Father Martin Collett of St. James Catholic Church officiating. Burial was in Douglas Park Cemetery.
