Graveside services were held March 8 at Black Hills National Cemetery with military honors and Chaplain Simon Looking Elk officiating.
Mr. Cartens was born Oct. 18, 1910, to John Christensen and Emma Annie (Whitrock) Cartens at Sheffield, S.D.
He spent two years in a Civilian Conservation Camp in the Black Hills area and then went into the United States Army for three years. He spent two years overseas. After his honorable discharge from the army in 1945, he moved to Belle Fourche, S.D.
On March 29, 1952, Mr. Carstens married Martha Stafford who had three sons. She passed away June 22, 1980. After he passing Mr. Carstens moved to Wyoming.
He was a life-long member of the VFW Post 7756 in Gillette.
Survivors include his three step-sons, Galen Stafford in Wyoming, Donald Stafford of Oregon and Charles Stafford of California; one sister, Hilda Hitten of Nebraska; one brother Herman Carstens of Huron, S.D.; six grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his wife, his parents, two sisters and three brothers.
