Douglas Budget - October 7, 2009Owen "Gene" Coughlin, 72, of Douglas, passes away Sept. 28, 2009.
Gene was born in Sacramento, Calif., July 14, 1937, to Joe and Martha Coughlin. They moved to Amador County shortly after. He went to the one-room schoolhouse in Pioneer until they finished the new school. He attended Amador High through his junior year. He joined the Navy in January 1955. He was stationed in the Phillipines for two years.
He married Clara Uselton in 1957. They had three children, Rick, Tammy and Joe. After getting out of the Navy, he worked construction for several years, then went to work for Volcano Telephone in 1969 where he worked until he retired in 1997 after 28 years. He was a little league coach for six years while the boys were growing up. He was one of the original four that got the ball rolling so they could build a ballpark on Buckhorn Ridge. He loved hunting until his legs went bad and he couldn't hike anymore. Gene and Clara moved to Douglas in 2004.
He is survived by his wife of almost 52 years; sons Rick (Darlene) Coughlin of Pine Grove and Joe (Debbie) Coughlin of Ione; daughter Tammy (Randy) Sather of Douglas; eight grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; sisters Marcha Ricks of Farmington, Utah, and Sue Hodges of Douglas; numerous nieces and nephews; and lots of friends.
Bustard Funeral Home of Casper is in charge of arrangements. At his request no service will be held.
