Douglas Budget - August 5, 1998Memorial services for Beatrice Marion Batten, 84, will be 10 a.m. Aug. 22 at St. Mark's Episcopal Church.
Mrs. Batten died July 20 at Central Wyoming Hospice in Casper. She was born Oct. 14, 1913, in Woodstock, Ontario, to Mabel Copp and Basil Bennetto. She attended school in Windsor, Ontario.
In 1935, she graduated from Grace Hospital Nursing School. She worked as a public health nurse in carious nursing capacities throughout her life.
In 1940, she married Joseph Bemister Batten of Bay Roberts, Newfoundland. He was rector of Christ Church of Douglas from 1960 until his death in 1970, and she served with him in parishes from Yellowknife near the arctic circle in Canada to Fort Washakie on the Wind River Indian Reservation.
From 1960-65, she operated a yarn and knit shop in Douglas and served as a judge at the Wyoming State Fair. After her move to Casper in 1974, she ran a day-care service until her retirement in 1978. She volunteered for Fort Washakie Health Service and Neighborhood Association, in the lunch room at St. Anthony School in Casper, and in weekly visits to Shephard of the Valley Nursing Home.
She was active in many Casper religious and civic organizations including St. Mark's Episcopal Church, Church Women United, Casper Senior Center and Right to Life. She was a founding member of the Casper Cinema Club and attended its foreign films regularly from 1978 until her death.
She is survived by sons, Bryan of Venice, Calif.; Earl and his wife of Seattle; and Wayne of Nashville; five grandchildren; and a sister, Kathleen Bulmer of Windsor.
In lieu of flowers, memorials to the Central Wyoming Hospice would be appreciated by the family.
