Unknown - November 24, 2004Converse County landowner Joseph r. Bixby, 79, of Kansas City, Mo., died Nov. 8. Private memorial services for the chairman of the board of Kansas City Life Insurance Company were held Nov. 12 in Kansas City.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions be made to the American Lung Association, 2400 Troost, Suite 4300, Kansas City, Mo. 64108, or the Heart of America Chapter of the Alzheimer's Association, 3846 West 75th Street, Prairie Village, Kan. 66208.
Mr. Bixby was born on April 7, 1925, to Walter Edwin Bixby and Angeline I. Reynolds-Bixby. He began his career at Kansas City Life in 1941, when he was 16 years old, working summers as a clerk. He attended the University of Missouri-Columbia and served two years in the Army. Following release from the armed services, he became a full-time associate in Kansas City Life's training program.
He became a vice-president of the company in 1955 and in 1957 was elected to the board. Mr. Bixby was named administrative vice president in 1962, president in 1964, CEO in 1970 and chairman of the board in 1972, a position he held at the time of his death.
Throughout his life, Mr. Bixby was involved with many civic organizations. His motto was "I can," and he had the ability to surround himself with talendted people.
Mr. Bixby enjoyed spending time at his ranch on Bixby Road, near County Roads 26 and 27 outside of Glenrock.
He is survived by his wife, Margie Morris Vogel Bixby of Kansas City, Mo.; daughters Kathryn A. Bixby-Haddad and Nancy Bixby Hudson of Lander; stepson Lee Marc Vogel; nephews, R. Philip Bixby and Walter E. "Web" Bixby III; and a niece, Ann I. Bixby.
