Unknown - January 20, 1972Funeral services for John A. Burgland, 84, a longtime resident of Converse County, were held Wednesday, January 19 at Stark-Lapham Chapel, with the Rev. Clyde Thompson of the First Baptist Church officiating. Mr. Burgland died Saturday at DePaul Hospital in Cheyenne, following two weeks hospitalization.
A native of Nebraska, Mr. Burgland was born Dec. 20, 1887 at Brady, to Solomon and Matilda Larson Burgland. He attended rural school in Wild Horse Valley, Lincoln County. On March 22, 1911 he was married at North Platte, to the former Esther Sundquist of Brady.
The couple resided at Gothenburg, Nebr. prior to Mr. Burgland's venture westward to Wyoming in 1917, in a covered wagon, to file on a homestead 11 miles north of Orpha. The year following, Burgland moved his family from Nebraska to the homestead, which remained the family home until the couple moved to Douglas in 1942. Mr. Burgland followed the painting profession until his retirement in 1969.
The Burlands (sic)celebrated their 60th Wedding Anniversary in 1971, an occasion shared with them by their five children and a host of friends.
Besides his wife, Esther, he is survived by a son, Alvin(Sonny)Burgland, Greybull, Wyo.; four daughters, Mrs. Nick(Florence) Azichkin, Tacoma, Wash., Mrs. Roy (Ethel) Price, Mrs. Glen (Caroline Naiman, and Mrs Grover (Opal) Stinson, all of Douglas; 14 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren. Five sisters preceded him in death.
Pallbearers were Frank Burrell, Bill Reece, Gale Prell, Tom Johnson, Buck Shelden and Carl Hohn.
Burial was in Douglas Park Cemetery.
