Douglas Budget - January 25, 1995Funeral services for Margaret Carolyn Burnett, 82, were Tuesday, Jan. 24, 1995, at Congregational United Church of Christ in Douglas with the Rev. Merrill Lanker officiating.
Interment was in the Douglas Park Cemetery.
A longtime resident of Douglas, Mrs. Burnett died Jan. 20 at Michael manor. She was born July 29, 1912, in Alliance, Neb., to John S. "Jack" and Anna Mae(Snyder)Ward. She moved to Douglas with her parents from rapid City, S.D., in 1923 and graduated from Douglas High School in 1930.
She earned a Phi Beta Kappa degree in business administration from the University of Nebraska in Lincoln in 1935. In 1936, she served on the staff of Sen. Robert E.Carey of Wyoming in Washington, D.C. Following her employment in Washington, she worked with the bank of American in Los Angeles before returning to Cheyenne to work in the Carey office there.
While in Cheyenne, Mrs. Burnett met Ben Burnett, whom she later married in a ceremony in Douglas on June 28, 1940.
She was confirmed in the Douglas Congregational Church on May 2, 1926, and was a 50-year member of the Order of Eastern Star and of P.E.O. She served many terms as treasurer for her church and for the Douglas Community Club.
She and her husband were original members of the Klondike Bridge Club.
She is survived by her husband of Douglas; several cousins; and many who loved her. She was preceded in death by her parents, and her daughter, Carolyn Ann Burnett, on July 29, 1954.
Serving as pallbearers were Tom Burley, Al Taylor, Butch Bolln, Randy Harrop, Mal Wagstaff, Tracy Gentle, George Darlington and Kenny Taylor.
Serving as honorary pallbearers were Vern Knisely, Bud Turner and Dr. William Hinrichs.
A memorial to the Congregational Church of Christ, the Converse County Hospice Group or to the Converse County Cancer Society would be appreciated by the family.
