Douglas Budget - November 17, 2004Funeral services for Douglas resident Fae Nickholas Burgess, 81, were held Nov. 15 at Bustard's Funeral Home in Casper, with Pastor Marvin Nelson officiating.
Interment was at Oregon Trail State Veteran's Cemetery.
Mr. Burgess died Nov. 10, 2004, at the Veterans' Administration nursing home in Sheridan.
He was born July 2, 1923, in Winnebago, Minn., to Nick and Vida (Eckholm) Burgess. He was raised and educated in Estherville, Iowa.
A career Navy man, he served in World War II aboard the battleship USS Indiana. He re-enlisted in 1948 and trained recruits and served on board the USS Ammen, Stallion and Grapple as an engine man, retiring as a chief petty officer.
On Nov. 26, 1948, he married Maurine Nelson in Estherville, Iowa. They moved to Douglas in 1996.
His hobbies included hunting, fishing, searching for arrowheads and restoring old cars. He enjoyed venturing south to Arizona during the winter. A life member of Disabled American Veterans, he also belonged to the Fleet Reserve Association, VFW and American Legion.
Mr. Burgess is survived by his wife Maurine of Douglas; sons Lon Burgess and wife Mary of Brandon, Minn., Gary Burgess of Douglas and Mark Burgess and wife Cheryl of Sundance; six grandchildren; sister Delores Fangman of Fort Collins, Colo.; and brother Darrell Burgess of Armstrong, Iowa.
He was preceded in death by his parents, six sisters and two brothers.
